Nowadays, each company uses IT equipment in every stage that involves data processing. An effective and efficient usage of IT is a key factor that differentiates successful companies from their less successful counterparts. Many companies understood the possibilities of exploiting IT capabilities and made high IT investments without deriving any benefits from IT. But using a new IT system implies risks that must be managed and mitigated in order to control the evolution of business within the established limits.
Trying to keep pace with the upcoming trends in the industry, Omnilogic anticipated the migration of the current model of distributed computing based on the personal computer, to the Data Center and real-time content distribution model.
Therefore, along with the build-up of its own campus (covering over 3 hectares and 15,000 m2 of building space), the company set-up the only 3 tier data center in Romania within its new Otopeni headquarters.
Branded as ODC (Omnilogic Data Center), Omnilogic Data Center is NOT a passive Hosting Solution, and this is the major difference from similar solutions existent in the Romanian market today.
Even within only the first months after the opening, some of the major (all major) companies within the Romanian financial sector and telecom decided to consider the new Omnilogic offer for the above mentioned managed hosted services.
With a final investment cost of over 8 million Euros, Omnilogic Data Center was designed and built as a dedicated, professional, flexible and secure IT environment, made available exclusively to Omnilogic strategic customers. The equipment and servers in Omnilogic Data Center are state-of-art, coming from world leaders in the industry.
Thanks to “state-of-the-art” solutions and to the facilities offered, the alternative choice of collocation, connectivity and ODC support services is a winning investment in favor of a more costly and risky one, offering a significant Cap Ex.
Data Center Features
A controlled climate for all the cells, provided by a redundant cooling system based on APC and TRANE technologies (for water cooling). The air conditioning systems provide a distributed control of temperature and humidity in the Data Center, and the air courses improve the environmental conditions for the equipment. The cooling architecture has been designed taking into account the latest research and recommendations in the industry, the mixed “row and rack oriented” solution being chosen in 2N redundant configuration.
As recommended by “Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments”, the climate technology keeps the temperature in the Data Center between 21 and 22 °C, and the humidity between 40 and 55%.
The fire suppression and detection systems are essential to maintain the integrity, safety and availability of a data center. Omnilogic Data Center is designed with the most modern systems and technologies for fire suppression and detection, both passive and active, incorporating a high degree of fire protection.
The solutions for sharing cells, floor, ceiling, walls and cabinets were chosen to isolate and extinguish fire without any impact upon surrounding areas. The fire protection system contains dozens of smart smoke detectors, as well as argon gas devices for eliminating fire and smoke in the room.
The air conditioning, electric power distribution units and racks that host servers are fixed on a structure independent of the technical floor system.
The network access and the support points are anchored and anti-seismically protected, including the tubing, conductors, fibers, cable lines, pipes and facilities for water and sewage and other mechanical / electrical equipment.
Security: we provide 5 access control levels, using magnetic cards, permanent guards, video surveillance of all spaces, authorization and access procedures, firewall and VLAN.
Structured cabling: structured cabling is certified CAT 7 STP and uses optical fiber.
The equipment and servers in the Omnilogic Data Center are state-of-art, coming from world leaders in the industry:
- the network infrastructure contains Cisco and Avaya/Nortel equipment
- the network security is provided with CHECKPOINT
- the servers are from SUN
- the storage equipment is from EMC
- virtualization is managed with VMWARE
The network infrastructure and equipment carry on the same redundancy policy, providing a 99, 99999% availability.
Omnilogic provides equipment and servers management, their monitoring and remediation of incidents take place in the Omnilogic Data Center 24x7x365 through its two departments, Help-Desk and Network Operating Center.
The provided services are standard or they can be customized, according to the customer's needs. Upon request, reports on operations, loading, availability, security threats, incidents, optimizations and other issues requested by the customer can be provided.
An experienced engineer team, specialized in various technologies, ensures Omnilogic Data Center management and permanently monitors the equipment and servers with a series of specific applications.
Omnilogic Data Center can provide connectivity through all important operators in Romania, VODAFONE, ROMTELECOM, ORANGE, SNR and PRIME TELECOM.
These operators provide entirely redundant connections, on various routes, from their points of presence to the Omnilogic Data Center. To provide a higher degree of availability, connectivity on various transmission media, such as copper, optical fiber and radio can be offered.
- Inside cells, a raised floor system has been built to allow installing electric cabling in a building providing the shortest routes and the best positioning to avoid interference.
- The floor is 42 cm high, the boards are highly polished and the load resistance distributed per board is 1350 kg / m2.
Physical security plays an important role in data centers. Omnilogic Data Centre has five levels of security to access servers and equipment in cells.
LEVEL 1: Access to the public area is done through a checkpoint based on the IC and on the customer database.
LEVEL 2: The security team at the entrance of the building will make a note of the visitor's identity and will provide them with proper access cards.
LEVEL 3: Access to the floor is allowed using individual access cards.
LEVEL 4: Once you reach the floor, access to cells is allowed using an individual access code, thus the name, the date and the time of each entry are recorded and can be checked at any time.
LEVEL 5: All the cabinets are locked; the keys are kept by the Omnilogic Data Centre team members.
Besides these five security levels, the entire Data Center is monitored 24x7 by security cameras and security teams. The cameras are placed outside the building, at the entrance, on each floor and in each cell, recording access to any of the cabinets.
Redundant Power Supply
The data center building is served by two different connections to the electricity network which prevents "the building" being affected in terms of electricity if one of the networks encounters any problems.
In addition, there are three generating sets operating on Diesel fuel, with a total power of 2.5 MW.
The Data Center is also equipped with UPSs ensuring the power supply of equipment at constant voltage and without interruptions.
To prevent “single points of failure”, all the elements in the electric system, including the backup system, are entirely doubled, and critical servers are connected to both power supplies “A-side” and “B-side”. This architecture is implemented in the Data Centre to have N+1 redundancy in the systems, thus providing protection against any incident which may occur at the critical elements:
- N+1 electric power supplies - ELECTRICA (ENEL), the Romanian
Electrical power distribuiton company, provides current, on a contract, from 2 different sources, which are linked by a 'loop', so that if one is interrupted accidentally or for maintenance, the other becomes operative. The sources are geographically located in different locations, one in Otopeni and one in Bucharest.
- N+1 electric transformers on Campus - An electric transformer supplies power to the entire Campus, the other two being dedicated to the Omnilogic Data Centre. One of them functions permanently, the other is a backup transformer, and if the first one breaks down, it automatically switches on the second one.
- The Data Center is powered by a circuit separated from the rest of the buildings on Campus. This circuit is N+1 redundant, meaning there are 2 power cables from the transformers to the Data Center, one being a back-up transformer.
- N+1 generators - If both electric supplies are unavailable, there are 3 Diesel generators. One is enough for Campus, but there are 2 generators that work at their half capacity to keep wear to a minimum. The third one is a backup generator, in case the first 2 break down.
- There are N+1 UPSs - Of the 5 UPSs (all of the same capacity), one is enough for CURRENT power use in the IT building, the other provides automatic takeover in case of malfunction. The N+1 redundancy is thus maintained for the entire capacity of the Data Center.
- The external units of the air conditioning system corresponding to the Omnilogic Data Centre are also N+1 redundant, meaning there is a backup chiller which automatically takes over the cooling, if the other breaks down.
